All that changes like the leaves

As the clouds reveal the morning light,
All my thoughts rise up like birds:
Wisps of nothing that evaporate and fly away;
Memories that echo for someone.

And my heart was like iron,
But these wings bore me into the sky.
Far beneath, the treetops melted into a sea,
And their faces were like waves.

What those wings bore – I wanted everything,
But all that changes like the leaves,
And as I soared, I had no offering,
Oh I had nothing, no not one thing to give.

I heard the voice of a Siren;
She tried to lure me out into the sea,
But a gull’s cry sent me crashing on a rocky reef
Into a memory that echoed for someone.
