The worst of me

Well the Friday sun is fading and the evening is just waking,
but I know I’m heading home alone again.
I don’t say that I am aching, but while they’re all out parading,
I’m still trapped here thinkin’ bout what might’ve been.

I don’t know why you only ever got to see the worst of me.
I don’t know why I never gave you any better words for me.

If you don’t say my name out loud,
then who’ll be here to call me out?
If you can’t see the way I’ve changed,
will I forget how far I came and become the worst of me?

Now the nights don’t feel so lonely, but I can’t see where I’m going
with my head down when I don’t look past my feet.
And the emptiness of knowing that my peace of mind is only
gonna fade out kills me as I take my seat.
And I wonder if to be known is a little more than I’m owed,
when I spend so much time thinkin’ by myself.
Need somebody who’ll be my own, a fellow traveler for the road,
one who’ll help me put books on my empty shelf.

I don’t know why you only ever got to see the worst of me.
I don’t know why I never gave you any better words for me.

If you don’t say my name out loud,
then who’ll be here to call me out?
If you can’t see the way I’ve changed,
will I forget how far I came and become the worst of me?
