If each of us our darkness

If each of us our darkness has within,
And each a shadow may remain until
The candle flickering ‘gainst the windowsill
Ignites at the reflection of its twin:
That light that touches light another brings,
That soul-shaped hole filled with another soul,
That broken piece that makes another whole,
That song which just one other songbird sings!
And when all hope was lost for light to grow,
That gloom-filled room doomed to penumbral shade,
At last, the dawn appeared upon the moor.
Two shadows met and into light did go,
Their warm embrace, the sound that two hearts made,
Echoed like footsteps down a corridor.
