If I went to war (soldier’s love song)

If I went to war, I think I’d slip off alone,
No note to lovers or friends, no one left at home,
No one waiting for my letter or for my call,
No one to remember my name if I should fall.

But if I left someone waiting, she’d have to be
One who’s not afraid to know the dark parts of me.
She could just be alone without feeling alone,
And she’d keep living when I left her on her own.

And I’d ask her to do one thing for me, that’s all;
When I am gone, she wouldn’t get lost in the squall.
She is bright like a star, but I think she’d agree
That neither of us on a pedestal could be.

And I can’t imagine that she thinks of me much,
And I can’t say that I’d really blame her for such.
So, I don’t write her in a letter how I feel,
And I don’t try to convince her that this is real.

Yet, I won’t regret that still day that we first met,
And all her kindness in between, I won’t forget.
And if I die at war, she may not notice I’ve gone,
But my soul will see her still shining like the sun.
